The Acca sellowiana is also known under the names: Brazilian guave, pineapple guave and Feijoa and can reach a height of 6 to 7 meters in bush form.
However, it takes more than 10 years before the bush / tree reaches a height of 3 meters. In addition, it is very easy to prune in every shape and therefore to keep small.
As the plant originates from Brazil you might think it is a tropical plant. However it comes from the highlands bordering Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay and is used to the cold, it is resistant to frost and can be placed outside. Worldwide this is a much produced guave that is mostly grown where it is too cold to grow the real guave. In New Zealand for example this is a very common type of fruit.
The leaf is oval in shape and silver hairy and this shrub gets very beautiful flowers that have a white petal and the crown of the flower is bright red and looks very exotic.
After the flowering period of June / July small blue guava fruits appear that change color to green.
These remain on the shrub all winter and are ripe in spring when they release from the bush / tree.
The edible guava fruits taste sweet / sour and have a length of about 5-7 cm and are oval in shape. The Acca is bisexual and therefore needs just one plant to grow fruit. Cross polination is always better to get fruit and for the taste of the fruit. There are different varieties for sale on our website. The varieties differ in taste and shape of the fruit and can be compared to that of apples (granny smith, Elstar, Pink lady etc.)
Winter hardiness zone 8a (-10ºC).
