Cissus quadrangularis is a special climbing plant that is known for its medicinal uses. The vines of the plant are square and look like that of Passiflora quadrangularis. Both have this name for a reason, it means square. The leaves of the plant grow only at the knots between the vines.

The plant itself is not hardy for a northeren European climate. In a greenhouse the plant will survive as long as the temperature stays above 0. The plant tolerates drought and likes a sunny spot in the garden.

In the medicinal practice of Ayurveda the plant is used for decades as a plant with healing power. It is mainly used to help the growth and healing of broken bones and torn tendons.

The plant can produce small flowers which will eventually make seeds. The plant has to be larger however to produce these. In the right climate and with the right support the plant can grow up to 5 meters in height. In a greenhouse the plant is easily kept smaller however as it tolerates pruning quite well.

Hardiness: 0ºC.
