Cudrania tricuspidata also called Che fruit, Cudrang and Chinese strawberry tree is a small fruit tree with special fruits, can also grow as a shrub or very low branched. Adult trees grow to a maximum height of 3 to 5 metres without pruning them, but they can be kept smaller by pruning without any problems.
This versatile fruit tree is a direct family (Moraceae) of the mulberry and akin to the fig (both also self-pollinating).
In June the tree blooms with white / green inconspicuous flowers.
The fruits show some resemblance to the fruits of the Cornus kousa and those of the strawberry. They are fire red in color. Gives fruit without pollination.
They are delicious sweet fruits, they have the taste of watermelon / strawberry / mandarin.
Also soon bear fruit as a young plant, often in the second year.
Fruits are often ripe in the months of September / October, a bit dependent on the summer.
The Cudrania tricuspidata likes to stand in a warm sunny place and tolerates all types of soil.
Che fruit is very hardy and and great to keep in our climate.
The Chinese strawberry tree loses all its leaves in the winter.
