Diospyros digyna or Black zapote is a tropical tree can grow to more than 5 meters high. Is also known under the name Caca poule.
The leaf on the tree is 15 to 25 cm long and oval in shape. It is an evergreen tree that gets a delicious dessert fruit.
The black zapote is green in color with brown dots.
If the skin of the fruit turns dark yellow / brown, it is ripe.
Ripe fruits are about 10 cm in diameter and the flesh is dark brown to black in color.
The taste is sweet with a nutty aftertaste and creamy texture similar to the avocado.
As a rule, the fruit is seedless, but if there are pips in it are about 2 cm, flat and there are ten or so in a fruit.
The fruits of the Diospyros digyna contain a lot of ascorbic acid (known as vitamin C), double of for example an orange.
Outside of South America the Diospyros digyna is not cultivated for the production of its fruits.
Is a pity, because this fruit is delicious and almost not available. The black zapote ripens well in a small greenhouse / greenhouse.
In the summer in a sunny place outside and by October the conservatory or greenhouse.
The fruits ripen in autumn and are ripe when they are as soft as pudding, hence the English name "Chocolate Pudding Fruit".
This Diospyros digyna is not hardy in contrast to the Diospyros kaki.
Winter hardiness zone 11 (+ 6ºC).
