Product information
  • Article number: FICCAGE05

Ficus carica or fig tree can be kept well in our climate. Cover in the winter and you enjoy it for a long time.
The ordinary traditional Italian fig must be in a sheltered place. Preferably in a sunny place.
The fruits are delicious to eat, they are ripe in September / October.
The leaf of the fig is also beautiful to see and in winter there remain thick, irregular branches that are so typical of the fig.
We often have special species such as Ficus carica Melanzana (red and intense aroma), Ficus carica Filacciano (large fruit, amber white to pink flesh) and Ficus carica Brogiotto Bianco also called Ficus carica Gentile (thin light green skin, honey red flesh, excellent taste).

Figs are best kept in the open ground, but a tub can also be fine.
Pruning of the fig occurs in the early spring, then dead points are pruned to one knot.
In summer, the tops of young shoots are pruned to 6 leaves if you find this necessary.
Provide an open shrub that the light can easily reach the frame branches everywhere.
Available green fruits for the fall of the winter can be picked.
These do not ripen off in the winter anyway.
Many tasty dishes can be made from figs. Fresh they are delicious but also in the oven, or as chutney, in the cake as jam etc.
Winter hardiness zone 7b (-12ºC).

Below is a list of the different kinds of figs that we have. The data given are indications and for every species there are many factors that can determine if a plant can give fruit. The ripening of figs is strongly dependent on it's location, the soil and the weather and can differ very much from the above mentioned data. When the first harvest doesn't ripen quickly enough the chances of a second harvest are a lot smaller. For the second harvest it is possible to have the fruits ready at the above mentioned time but later is also an option.
