Mespilus germanica is a little-seen plant in the gardens. In the time of the Romans the fruits were distributed in Europe.
Originally, the Mespilus germanica comes from Asia and was 700 years BC. planted for the first time in Greece.
Here in Europe there are now various species in cultivation.

The Mespilus germanica is a plant that should not be missing in the edible garden. This is self-pollinating and in may 3 to 4 cm big white blossom that smells delicious.
The Mespilus germanica will get fruit from the age of four at the earliest. The plants that we offer are already producing fruit.
The fruits mature late in October early November. It is best to let a few night frosts come over the fruit and then harvest.
In order to get the medlar completely to taste, you put it away 2-3 weeks in a cooler place with the top of the fruit down.
Now that they are a little softer, they taste completely, they become sweet and the flesh is discolored from green / white to dark brown.

So after that two weeks of settling, they have to be processed.
Delicious jelly / jam can also be made from the medlar. Also as a chutney in game dishes, they are indispensable and it is an absolute delicacy.
Pruning the plant is not necessary every year. Every 3 to 4 years you can prune away the excess old fruit-bearing branches.
