Acnistus australis or Iochroma australis. The flowers are violet/blue and bell-shaped, somewhat resembling those of the Brugmansia, but smaller well 5 cm long and much more numerous.
The flowers grow in clusters of 5 to 8, the flowers attract many butterflies.
This perennial is a great addition to your patio or garden. Besides the fact that the Acnistus australis flowers very strongly from May to September, the plant is easy to care for.
The soil may be slightly moist in summer, but certainly not too wet, this plant is well drought tolerant.
A sunny to semi-shady spot is ideal.
It can be planted in the full ground in a sheltered location, the hardiness is reasonable. If the plant does freeze after a harsh winter, it will often grow back from the root.
If it is overwintered as a container plant above +10ºC, it remains fairly evergreen. If overwintered in cooler temperatures, the leaves will turn yellow and it will lose the leaves, but a new one will appear in the spring of early May. Plants delivered in winter and early spring have no or yellow leaves.
If the plant is not pruned the maximum height is 110/140 cm. Pruning is not necessary, or only prune back a single height branch substantially if necessary.
Hardiness zone 9b (-8ºC).
