Hibiscus syriacus Woodbridge also called Althea shrub or garden hibiscus is an ornamental shrub of the mallow family. This shrubby hibiscus is very hardy to be planted in the ground.
In April/May the plant sprouts again with new young, fresh green leaves. During the spring and early summer she produces many flower buds. From July to October, this hibiscus flowers very exuberantly with dark pink flowers. The dark pink flowers have a red/purple heart.
The plant prefers a sheltered sunny place. The hibiscus does well on almost every type of soil. During a hot dry summer she likes to have some extra water which will promote the formation of flower buds.
Without pruning, plants eventually grow to 2 to 3 meters high and up to 2 meters wide after about 8 to 10 years.
However, the hibiscus is fine and can be pruned at will, it is best to do this in March. You can also remove any dead wood from the plant.
If you really want to apply rejuvenation, then prune back to well 50 cm above the ground.
The hibiscus blooms every year on the first year's wood. So pruning in March has no effect on the flowering that year, from July you will have the first flowering again.
A generous dose of dried cow manure pellets in April is sufficient once a year.
In the autumn the leaves will slowly turn yellow and the Hibiscus syriacus Woodbridge will eventually be bare during the winter. It is hardy in our climate.
Winter hardiness zone 7a (-18ºC).
