Hippophae rhamnoides is a well-known plant for people living near the coast. It is often planted in these areas due to its unique properties. The sea buckthorn or dune berry is one of the few plants that thrive in dune environments. It can survive long periods without water, making it well-suited for fast-draining soils.

There are both male and female plants, but distinguishing between them is quite difficult. The appearance of fruit is a clear indication that a plant is female. However, Hippophae rhamnoides only starts producing flowers after 3 to 4 years. Even when flowering, it remains challenging to determine the plant's sex.

Fruit production is one of the main reasons to cultivate this plant in gardens. The berries have a fairly sour taste but are rich in various vitamins and minerals. Additionally, they contain a significant amount of oil—about 5% in the pulp and up to 10% in the seeds. Sea buckthorn oil is used in alternative medicine to relieve symptoms of dry mucous membranes. In Eastern Europe, it is also used as an alternative remedy for damage caused by radiation or sunburn.

Due to its characteristics (tolerance to poor soil, resistance to shifting sand and salt), this plant is an interesting option for many gardens and as an agricultural crop. Sea buckthorn berries are used in jam, marmalade, or liqueur.

Sea buckthorn has an interesting feature: it forms nitrogen-fixing nodules on its roots. These nodules increase nitrogen levels in the soil, providing a natural way to enrich the ground.

The dune berry is a fascinating plant with many benefits. It is native to the Netherlands, and its berries are a popular food source for birds. Its ability to grow in harsh conditions makes it one of the strongest plants for areas where little else can thrive. However, there are some downsides: its lifespan is around 15 years, and it spreads through runners, which can make it invasive in gardens. If properly managed, sea buckthorn can be a beautiful and valuable addition to any garden.

Hardiness zone 4b (-30ºC).
