Juglans nigra is known in Europe as the black walnut. This tree originates from the eastern part of North America, where it is mainly used in the timber industry.

The tree can grow very large, reaching heights of up to 30 meters if planted in suitable soil. Its crown is open to semi-open. The leaves are shaped similarly to those of other Juglans species: a lance-shaped leaf with about 20 leaflets per "leaf."

The tree blooms in late spring, around the end of May or June. At that time, male or female flowers will appear. The male flowers, known as "catkins," can grow up to about 10 cm long.

The fruit has a diameter of 4-5 cm and is almost perfectly round. Inside, the black walnut grows, which is very tasty. Additionally, the fruit of the black walnut contains much more oil compared to the "regular" walnut, making it a popular ingredient in bakery products. However, the shell is significantly thicker than usual, and some nutcrackers cannot break it. Therefore, it is advisable to let the nut dry before cracking it.

Juglans nigra is highly winter-hardy and does not have many requirements for its growing location. It will grow in almost all soil types, but for the best yield and growth, there are some factors to consider. A well-draining soil that retains moisture and provides enough space for deep rooting is ideal. Additionally, calcareous soil is more beneficial for this species.

Hardiness zone 5b (-22ºC).
