Koelreuteria bipinnata also called Chinese flame tree.
This plant from China is a small tree with a broad crown and some nice features.
Design is sometimes multi-stemmed, but also kept as standard.
The green double-leathered leaves are up to 30 cm long. The bark is grey/brown and grooved.

In July and August the Koelreuteria paniculata blooms profusely with yellow flowers with an orange heart that grow in large upright panicles. This is an irresistible treat for butterflies.
Besides that the tree blooms beautifully, beautiful green blister-shaped fruits appear on the tree after flowering.
These fruits change color from yellow/orange to pink/red and contain non-toxic black seeds. These blisters are up to 5 cm in size and remain on the plant until autumn.

In autumn the leaf changes very nicely to yellow and later to orange.
The Chinese flame tree likes a sunny sheltered spot and can be planted on dry soil.
This tree also does very well on poor soil. In winter the Koelreuteria bipinnata loses its leaves.
Winter hardiness zone 6b (-20ºC).
