The Musa nono "Pink Variegated" is a banana plant primarily known for its striking leaf coloration. The Musa nono is a pink banana, and the variegated variety has a more green/white color pattern while still clearly displaying the characteristic pink of the nono.
Younger plants are usually lighter in color and will develop a more intense pink hue, especially when exposed to ample sunlight. Temperature also plays a crucial role in this process. However, do not place the plant in an overly "comfortable" spot, as this can cause weak, floppy growth that breaks easily. It is advisable to place the plant in a permanent location where it can acclimate. Once adapted to its surroundings, it will adjust its growth according to the available light, warmth, humidity, and water supply.
Since this is a variegated variety, it does not originate from a specific region. However, the ancestor of the Musa nono pink comes from tropical areas around the equator and requires similar conditions. A minimum year-round temperature of 15°C is recommended. Light requirements are approximately 50/50 compared to dark hours. When watering, it is best to mimic a tropical downpour, providing the plant with a generous amount of water in one go. Once the soil has dried out, it can be watered again. Banana plants clearly indicate when they are too dry—the leaves will curl inward and droop. However, overwatering should also be avoided, as consistently wet roots can lead to rot. Being a herbaceous plant, it lacks woody parts that can withstand prolonged exposure to moisture.
Like all variegated varieties, it is best not to leave the nono in full sun for too long. A location where it occasionally gets some shade will help prevent burn marks on the whiter parts of the plant.
For experienced banana growers, the nono "Pink Variegated" is one of the most exciting bananas to own. Its spectacular colors vary from leaf to leaf.
