Nyssa aquatica is a tree that has it's origin in the United States. This hardy tree mainly grows in swamps and floodplains in the southeast. In the swamps of Louisiana the tree can grow up to 30 meters in height. The tree is easily recognisable due to it's broad base. The trunk than tapers up to a thinner trunk and it starts growing side branches at an early height. The bark is grey green in colour at first and quite smooth when the tree is young. When it grows larger this thickens in a whimsical way. The colour of the leaves is green but changes to red/orange in autumn.
Nyssa is a hardy tree that can withstand temperatures up to -20 and is therefore very suited for the Northern European climate. The tree is in water in it's natural habitat and can endure this for several months. A wet location is not a must but this tree is one of the few that has absolutely no problems with it.
Bigger trees can give flowers and fruit. The fruit itself is inedible but can be sown. The flowers however are a favourite of bees and Tupelo honey is well known for it's delicate sweet flavour.
Winter hardiness zone 5b (-25ºC).
