This species comes from Brazil and is grown there on a large scale. the maracuya differs so much from the passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) that people wonder if the maracuya even belongs to the species of edulis.
This difference is mostly visible in it's fruit. The flowers are almost identical in colour and shape. The flavicarpa flowers can grow slightly bigger though. The fruit is yellow like a lemon and somewhat larger than that of the regular passionfruit. The maracuya however does not self pollinate and this means that at least two plants are needed to grow fruit. Next to the colour the taste also differs. The pulp has a deep dark orange colour en taste a bit more acidic.
