Prunus armeniaca L. "Cibo del Paradiso" is a fruit producing apricot tree. The Apricot flowers early in the year with bright white flowers. The fruits are round, orange and very tastefull. They are known for their long experation date and can be dryed or used in different dishes.
The apricot is not produces much in northern Europe. Production is mostly done in Turkey and other countries that are warmer in early spring. The plant needs protection during this period against frost since it flowers early in spring. To counter this freezing the tree can best be placed against a south facing wall or partly protected during cold nights. With the right protection it is very possible to produce your own fruit in your own backyard.
Besides the fruit this plant is very easily taken care of. Temperatures shall not be a problem, the plant originates in west-China (not Armenia as the name suggests) and can handle cold, drought and heat very well. The tree does have a preference to not be too wet. This can always be taken care of by adding drainage to the bottom.
The leaves differ very much from other Prunus species. They are wider and rounded at the end which makes them very easily noticeable.
The apricot is self pollinating and ripens in August. The fruits contain a large pit which can not be eaten. The tree is grafted. The name "Cibo del paradiso" means food of paradise, with a name like that it should taste great.
