Prunus salicina L. Black Splendor is a fruit bearing tree with purple/dark plums. The plum is a hybrid form that ripens early and is very suited to the Northern European climate. The tree flowers overwhelmingly in early year and ripens its fruits around August.
The fruits are quite large for a plum, up to 6 cm in width. The fruits are dark coloured with a black peel that could have a light white haze over it. The pulp is dark of colour and very tasty.
Plums are often eaten fresh but can be used in many dishes or sauces but can also be made into jam.
The leaves are lancet shaped and long. The tree loses it's leaves in winter. The species knows it's origins in China at altitutes ranging between 200 and 2500 meters. The plant is therefore resistant towards heat and cold.
Winter hardness zone 6a (-24ºC).
