Ruscus hypoglossum is an evergreen shrub and a very special perennial that is closely related to the asparagus. This is also known under the name butchers broom.
Young shoots of this plant can be eaten and taste like asparagus.
From the old branches brooms were made in Italy in the past.
The plant grows very slowly and the maximum height is about 100 cm and the width is 80 cm and this takes years.

A sunny to a shady place is well tolerated by the Muisedoorn, as well as a sandy or clay soil.
In spring, a small white flower appears on the oblong deep green stiff smooth leaves on the upper side in the center.
Only the female flowers on this plant (plant is dioecious) develop a berry on top of the leaf.
At first this berry is green, but in the autumn it turns bright red and gives it a spectacular look.
These branches can easily be used as decoration in a flower arrangement for Christmas.
