Zingiber officinale is the plant whose rhizome is used as ginger. Ginger is used in among other things the Asian kitchen or cut up and used to spice up tea.
The plant itself grows up to a meter in height depending on the age and the soil in which it's planted. The leaves are opposite to one another and are 2cm broad and up to 20 cm in length. In winter the ginger lets its leaves fall. Only the rhizomes will survive under the ground. in spring the plant will start growing from the buds on the rhizome. It's possible to get a flowering ginger. The flower bud starts to show in summer on top of the growing point with bright yellow flowers.
Ginger made from the rhizomes of this plant. Ginger itself can be used for various ends but is most commonly used in the Asian cuisine. With it's unmistakenable flavour it surely can't be missed.
